General FAQs
- Which caliber handguns do you have for rent?
For all of our courses, as well as private instruction, we have .22LR, .38 special, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.
- What is your refund policy?
At Savage Outdoor & Defense we have a money-back guarantee. If you cannot make your scheduled class, or one of the following two, we will give you 100% of your money back, minus any late cancellation fees and deposits.
- Who gives you the authority to teach these courses?
Shane is a certified NRA Pistol Instructor and Range Safety Officer, as well as certified through the DPS to teach the LTC Course.
- When was Savage Outdoor & Defense founded?
Savage Outdoor & Defense was founded in April of 2019. If you’d like more information about what makes us who we are, please check out our About Us page.
- Do you have ammunition for sale for classes?
Yes, we have limited amounts of ammunition for sale for use in classes. However, we ask that you please try to bring the appropriate amount you will need as our for-sale supply is limited.
- Do you offer any discounts for classes?
Absolutely! Here is a list of the discounts we currently offer:
- $5 off per person for referrals
- **If someone who has previously taken one of our classes referred you, just add their name in the notes section of your signup form to receive your discount.
- $5 off per person when you register more than one person at a time
- $5 off active duty military, veterans, or first responders

- Do you have Savage Outdoor & Defense merchandise for sale?
Yes, we do! We have merchandise for sale at all of our classes. For orders over $100, we offer free delivery within 25 miles of Bryan. For orders placed further away, we require a shipping fee.
- Can I purchase firearms through Savage Outdoor & Defense?
Not at this time, but you will be able to in the near future!
- Which days are “business days”?
We are open for business 7 days a week.
- When will you be offering firearm services?

License to Carry (LTC) FAQs
- What does LTC stand for?
License To Carry, formerly known as a CHL or Concealed Handgun License.
- If I fail the LTC course, can I retake it?
Absolutely! Here at Savage Outdoor & Defense, if you fail the course, we allow up to two retakes free of charge. All you cover is the range fee. We also provide you with one hour of free private instruction to help you in the areas that you struggled in.
- Do I need to own a handgun to take the course?
No, however it is recommended that you bring your own handgun so that you can practice with the gun you plan to use.
- What if my firearm has a built-in laser, can I still use it to qualify for my LTC?
Yes, you can. We simply ask that you do NOT activate it at all during the qualification.
- Can a spouse, child, or friend accompany me to the class, even if they aren’t taking the course?
Yes! We do allow others to sit in on the class, however they must pay a $30 fee to reserve their seat. We also highly recommend that no one under the age of 17 sits in on the class, since the content can be graphic.
- Do I need pistol experience to take the LTC course?
No, however it is recommended as there is a shooting proficiency test included in the course. Instructors are also not allowed to assist in any way during the shooting portion of the course. If you believe you will struggle, we highly recommend looking into our Basics of Pistol Shooting class. This class is designed for beginners with minimal handgun experience! Or check out our Private Instruction.
- What do I need to bring for the LTC course?
All you need is ammunition, a handgun, and your state issued ID. If you have your own eye and ear protection, feel free to bring it, but we supply those materials free of charge! We also have handgun rental on a limited basis, so please let us know in advance if you’d like to rent a handgun.
- How much ammunition should I bring?
We recommend bringing 100 rounds. You will need 50 rounds for the shooting test and the extra 50 is in case of a retest or malfunctions. If more ammunition is needed, we have a limited supply for sale.
- What is the cost to rent a handgun?
Handgun rental is $15 on a first come, first serve basis. If you fail the LTC course, you will be allowed to reuse the rented handgun free of charge!
- How long is the LTC course?
The classroom portion of the course is approximately 4 hours long, followed by a 30-minute examination. Following the exam, we will have an optional walkthrough of how to submit your application and supporting documents to the DPS. The range portion typically takes about an hour. Add that up and you should expect to spend 5.5-6 hours taking the course!
- What are the LTC fees?
There is a $65 classroom fee, $40 state licensing fee, and a $10 fingerprinting fee. Overall, your cost will be $115. Active-duty military, and those within 1 year of discharge, can waive the state application fee.
- How soon can I begin carrying?
As soon as your official LTC ID card arrives in the mail.
- How long does it take to receive my LTC ID card?
The DPS has 60 days to issue a new license, and 45 days to issue a renewal. However, recent reports say that, assuming no priors, you will receive it within a month.
- Do I need to be a Texas resident?
No, however you must be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, or permanent resident.
- Do I have to carry the caliber I qualify with? Or the type of handgun I qualify with?
No, it does not matter what type of handgun or caliber you qualify with, you may carry any caliber or type of handgun you choose.
- What is an LTC Form-100?
It is documented proof of your completion of the LTC course and must be submitted to the DPS to receive your official LTC.
- If I can’t make a class, can I reschedule?
Absolutely, you are allowed a one-time free rescheduling as long as you give us 72 hours or more of notice. If given less than 72 hours’ notice you may still reschedule but may be charged a $20 rescheduling fee.
- How long do I have to apply for my license after I take the course?
Your qualifications are good for exactly 2 years from the date of your class.
- What days do you offer the LTC course on?
We can offer them on any day of the week, provided there is a need on that day.
Basics of Pistol Shooting FAQs
- What do I need to bring for the Basics of Pistol Shooting course?
It is recommended that you bring your own handgun to use, however we do have limited handgun rentals for $15 on a first-come, first-serve basis. You will also need ammunition for your handgun. If you plan to rent a handgun, please let us know so that we can inform you of which ammo to purchase. Eye and ear protection are provided, however feel free to bring your own.
- How much ammunition should I bring?
We recommend bringing 150 rounds of ammunition. The shooting qualification requires 60 rounds, and the extras may be used for retests or malfunctions. We will also have a limited amount of ammunition for sale if more is needed.
- How long is the Basics of Pistol Shooting course?
The BOPS course is approximately 9 hours long. This includes 8 hours of classroom time and 1 hour on the range.
- Will there be breaks during the day?
Yes! We schedule multiple breaks throughout the day, as well as a 1-hour lunch break.
- Do I need to pack a lunch?
That is completely up to your discretion. We have a 1-hour lunchbreak scheduled, but if you would like to eat in the classroom and continue to go over materials, that is also an option.
- Do I need to own my own handgun to take this course?
Absolutely not! However, it is highly recommended that you bring your own handgun as we will be teaching you the specifics of handling, loading, and cleaning your handgun.
- Do I have to be an NRA member to take this course?
No. Everyone is encouraged to take this course regardless of their NRA affiliation or lack thereof.
- Do you offer NRA memberships?
Yes, we do! We offer all lengths of memberships, from 1 year to lifetime memberships. Follow this link or pick up a paper form at one of our classes!
- If I can’t make the class I signed up for, can I reschedule?
Absolutely, you are allowed a one-time free rescheduling as long as you give us 72 hours or more of notice. If given less than 72 hours’ notice you may still reschedule but may be charged a $20 rescheduling fee. Be wary, this class is not offered as frequently as some of our others. This means if you need to reschedule you may have to wait awhile.
- Can a spouse, child, or friend accompany me to the class, even if they aren’t taking it?
No. Unfortunately due to the nature of this particular course’s content. We do not allow non-students to sit in.
- Do you allow kids to take this course?
We do allow children aged 13+ to take this course. However, we highly recommend that they take our Youth BOPS course instead. It is essentially the same course, the material is just presented in a way that is better suited for youth.
Youth Basics of Pistol Shooting FAQs
- Do I need to accompany my child?
No, but you may accompany them if you’d like.
- Do I need to provide my child with a handgun?
No, we do have handgun rentals for $15 on a first come first serve basis. However, we do recommend that you do provide one so that your child can become familiar with the handguns you have in your home.
Intro to Pistols Weekend FAQs
- What do I need to bring for the weekend?
Yourself, your handgun, and your ammunition. Snacks and a water bottle are also good ideas for our long day. Eye and ear protection is provided, but you may bring your own if you wish.
- How much ammunition do I need?
We recommend bringing 250 rounds of ammunition. The BOPS course requires a minimum of 60 rounds, and the LTC course requires a minimum of 50. The extra rounds are in case you need a requalification.
- Do I need to pack a lunch?
This is 100% up to your discretion. We recommend bringing snacks for consumption throughout the day, but we do have a scheduled 1-hour lunch break.
- How long are the days?
The first day will be approximately 9 hours, including range time, and the second day will be approximately 6 hours.
- Do I have to take both classes in one weekend to get the bundle pricing?
You are required to sign up for them at the same time to receive the discount, but we understand that schedules are busy. If you cannot make both days of the class, we can allow you to move one of the classes to a separate date as long as there is availability, and the dates must fall within a month of each other.
Private and Group Instruction FAQs
- Do I need to bring my own handgun?
No, however, since this lesson is tailored specifically to your needs and wishes we highly recommend that you bring your own handgun to learn how to properly handle and operate it.
- What topics can be covered during private instruction?
We can cover just about anything you’d like! These lessons are designed to be tailored specifically to your needs. Let us know what you would like to learn, and we can cover it!
- Do you offer discounts for private instruction?
Unfortunately, at this time we do not yet offer discounts on our private instruction.
- Do you offer in-home private instruction, or is it at the range only?
If you do not plan on live firing your handgun, and you would prefer an at home lesson then we can absolutely accommodate you!
Firearm Services FAQs
- How long does scope mounting take?
If the firearm is dropped off before noon we offer same-day service. For firearms dropped off after noon they will be ready by the end of the next business day.
- How long does bore sighting take?
Bore sighting is typically done while you wait and takes about 15 minutes.
- How long does cleaning take?
If you drop your firearm off before noon, we guarantee it to be ready by the end of the next business day. If they are dropped off after noon they will be ready within 2 business days.
- What is the turnaround on a final sight-in?
We guarantee a turnaround of 3 business days for all final sight-in packages and services.
- How long does an AR build take?
Although shipping times may vary and can have a significant impact on build time, once we have all of the necessary materials we guarantee to have lowers built within 2 business days, uppers within 3 business days, and complete builds within a week. If your build comes complete with a scope and a final sight-in please allow us 2 extra business days to complete your build.
- How long does AR trigger work take?
If we receive the trigger and the AR before noon we offer same-day turnaround. If we receive them after noon, they will be ready by the end of the next business day.
- Do you offer layaway for complete AR builds?
Yes, we do! For builds over $300 we have a 60-day interest-free layaway option; for builds over $500 we offer a 90-day interest-free layaway option; and for builds over $1000 we offer a 180-day interest-free layaway option. **Note** we will not release your firearm to you until we have received 100% compensation for the value owed.
- How long does feed ramp polishing take?
Feed ramp polishing is guaranteed to be completed within 2 business days.
- Do you offer expedited services?
Yes, we do! If you need your service performed more swiftly than the expected wait time, we can perform expedited services. However, there will be an expedited service fee that is dependent on the service requested
Fishing Reel Services FAQs
- Which types of reels do you work on?
We work on every type of reel available on the market! From baitcast, to flipcast, to spincast, and everything in between. Freshwater or saltwater, bring it to us and we’ll hook you up!
- How long do fishing reel services take?
If we receive the reel before noon we offer same day turnaround. If we receive the reel after noon, it will be ready by the end of the next business day.
- Why are saltwater services more expensive than freshwater services?
Saltwater services are more expensive for a couple reasons. First, saltwater reels are typically larger and more heavy duty than freshwater reels, and thus take more time and product to clean or spool. Secondly, due to the high content of salt in saltwater, these reels are subjected to significantly more corrosion than freshwater reels. Therefore, it is more difficult to clean and counteract the corrosion than it is with freshwater reels.
